France Doesn't Need a Local Champion, It Needs a Distribution Lock

DramaShorts didn't win July in France by making the best show. It won by owning the ad inventory month after month, the kind of dominance SocialPeta measures in share of exposure, not share of taste. That distinction matters more here than in the US, where Variety can point to a $150 billion topline and let the number do the talking. France is a smaller pond, and a smaller pond rewards whoever floods it first. DramaShorts isn't necessarily the platform French viewers prefer — it's the platform they can't avoid.

That's the actual playbook, and it travels. Bilibili just stripped identity verification from its international app and started recruiting YouTubers across six cities, which is a distribution move dressed as a content move. Nobody is trying to out-write anyone. They're trying to out-buy them for eyeballs before a local challenger can compound. The vertical drama land grab in Europe isn't a taste contest, it's an auction for who gets to be the default app on a phone before regulators or competitors notice there was an auction at all.

This analysis crosses data from 12 independent sources. The VerticalDrama Score (VDS) is a proprietary composite metric.
