The Diaspora Is a Market, Not an Audience

JioHotstar's UK, Canada and Singapore launch arrived with a curious omission in its own framing: no sports, a fact JioStar volunteered to TechCrunch before anyone asked, because existing rights deals in those markets made silence impossible. But the more interesting tell is what's being sold instead — Bigg Boss voting across six languages, a monthly plan that vanishes the moment you leave India. This isn't a streaming expansion, it's a remittance product with video attached. The Ministry of External Affairs count — 3.2 million in Canada alone, 1.28 million in the UK, under half a million in Singapore — isn't background color, it's the actual addressable market JioHotstar is pricing against, and it's smaller and more concentrated than the "diaspora" framing in the financial press implies.

Vertical drama's own overseas plays should read this as a warning, not a template. ReelShort's leaderboard still rewards reach and momentum inside markets already saturated — nothing in this week's VDS scores shows overseas_heat as a live variable, because nobody's isolating it yet. JioHotstar just did the work of admitting that a diaspora audience buys loyalty, not discovery. The vertical platforms selling "global" numbers without that distinction are still counting the wrong thing.
