The Crew Is the Cost Center Now

Qidian Interactive, the Wuxi studio Sixth Tone spent two dispatches inside, didn't cut costs by making cheaper episodes. It cut costs by making fewer humans necessary to make them — a one-person crew standing in for what used to be a dozen roles on set. That's a different claim than "AI drama is cheap," which everyone already believes. It's a claim about where the labor used to sit and where it doesn't anymore. Pair that with the Douyin number circulating this week — the bulk of top animated dramas on the platform already AI-made, filtered to us through a Chinese research firm and then the Financial Times, three hops from the source — and the picture isn't a genre finding its style. It's a workforce finding out it was a bottleneck.

Ogun Studios, sitting under embargo until publication clears in a week or two, is the same story with a TikTok badge on it: an official partner whose entire pitch is that no crew was there to begin with. Holywater's Bogdan Nesvit is on record this week saying studios are knocking on their door — but knocking to license infrastructure, not to hire people. The interesting fight in this industry stopped being about scripts or hooks. It's about who still needs a set.
