The number is the product, not the measure

HOLYWATER runs two counters on the same domain: 100M+ lifetime downloads on the homepage, 100M+ unique users in the press room. These are not two phrasings of the same fact — they're two denominators that never overlap. A download is not a user, let alone an active one. The confusion isn't a communications slip, it's the resource. A figure that changes definition depending on the target page speaks to exactly the audience it needs to: the one that doesn't click through to the source.

This month exposes the same friction on other walls. RIDI shuts down Kanta thirteen months after launching it, the second vertical platform to die after Pocket TV in June — two companies that, unlike HOLYWATER, had to show real retention numbers to shareholders, not to a press room. Meanwhile CNBC documents a Chinese market flooding the space with low-cost bets and letting the public sort it out — a system that produces honest data precisely because no one can afford to dress it up at that volume.

The lesson isn't that HOLYWATER is cheating. It's that the industry still hasn't decided which metric counts, and until it does, every player picks its own — and presents it as settled fact.

This analysis crosses data from 12 independent sources. The VerticalDrama Score (VDS) is a proprietary composite metric.
