The Trade Press Isn't Watching the Market That's Actually Growing

Reuters spent a week reporting that microdrama is the only growing segment of a contracting Hollywood — Omdia numbers, the whole apparatus of legitimation. Same week, Antenna published its Specialty SVOD landscape, US-only, 31 services, +14% YoY, and not one line about vertical platforms. Meanwhile a DCAA business development memo claims 40 million views out of African microdrama and addresses it directly to platforms, nommément — which is not journalism, it's a pitch deck wearing a headline. Three sources, three audiences, and none of them talking to each other. That's the actual state of the sector: legible enough for Reuters to write the trend piece, illegible enough that the analysts who track subscription products don't have a line item for it yet.

The Jamie Oliver deal is the tell nobody's reading correctly. Life360 financing five vertical episodes with a celebrity chef isn't a content story, it's a media-buying story — brand budgets migrating to vertical format because the format sells attention, not narrative. That's a different market than ReelShort's romance catalog, and it's growing faster than anyone's benchmark captures it.

The gap between Reuters' macro numbers and Antenna's silent panel is where the real valuation question sits, and right now nobody's pricing it. That mispricing won't last through Q3.

This analysis crosses data from 12 independent sources. The VerticalDrama Score (VDS) is a proprietary composite metric.
